The Art of Tasting

There are two distinct approaches to wine tasting, which might be termed ‘technical’ and ‘for enjoyment’. They differ both in method and purpose.

FALL MEMBERS’ COURSE

The Académie du Vin Wine Appreciation Courses were the brainchild of our Founder, Steven Spurrier, who firmly believed that the only way to learn about fine wines was to sample as many of them as possible – in the company of experts who could explain the fine shades of difference between them and why they came to be so.

Steven ran his first Course in Paris in 1973. In continued partnership with the Vintage Conservatory, the Académie du Vin is delighted to offer the Fall Advanced Course series.

What’s included in the Fall Members’ Course?

We are absolutely thrilled to introduce our upcoming three-night Fall Members’ Course: “Our Journey Through Bordeaux, Burgundy, Tuscany, Veneto, and Piedmont.”

Embark on an elegant adventure of the senses, from the comfort of our private room overlooking King Street West. Over the course of three evenings, we will explore the heart and soul of five of the world’s most iconic wine regions.

Night 1: Bordeaux

So often we get asked; what makes Bordeaux so special? What makes the greatest wines reach such soul-stirring heights? In this masterclass, we will pour top vintages of our favourite wineries in Bordeaux, explain what makes their wines and terroir so special, and how to pair iconic aged wines with food.

Here are the Bordeaux selections we have chosen:

  • Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc Pessac-Léognan 2015
  • Les Forts de Latour Pauillac 2010
  • Château Angélus St. Émilion Grand Cru 1998
  • Château Sociando Mallet Haut-Médoc 1996
  • Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Pauillac 2009
  • Château La Conseillante Pomerol 2001
  • Château Léoville Barton St. Julien 2003
  • Château d’Yquem Sauternes 1976

Night 2: Burgundy

Burgundy, a fabled region in which the greatest of wines are now so expensive they are more often thought of as unattainable. In this masterclass, we will pour top vintages of our favourite wineries in Burgundy, with a focus on showing you what made the region famous, and how far Burgundy has come in winemaking. This is an opportunity not just to try, but to understand the intricacies of the most complex, and now fabled, region in the world.

Here is what we will be tasting from Burgundy:

  • Domaine de la Vougeraie Vougeot 1er Cru Clos Blanc de Vougeot 2018
  • Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Séchet 2008
  • Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L’Enfant Jesus 2014
  • Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot 2001
  • Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 2009
  • Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 1999
  • Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue Grand Cru 2008
  • Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 2006

A captivating evening of Burgundy’s finest wines and exquisite food pairings. We are excited to savor the artistry of Burgundy with you.

Night 3: Tuscany, Veneto, and Piedmont – A Truffle-Lover’s Dream

The greatest wines of Italy truly represent some of the most exciting regions to buy ageable and collectible wine. Their ability to pair with food in our opinion is unrivaled and as avid lovers of the world’s greatest food and wine combinations, we will showcase the wines and wineries that made their regions famous, with a white Alba truffle-focused menu. Savoring the offerings of these aged producers is a rare privilege, and we are thrilled to present some of Italy’s authentic cult wines with a touch of maturity while engaging in discussions about the bright prospects that lie ahead for Italy’s preeminent wineries.

Here are the wines we have chosen for night three:

  • Azienda Agricola Montevertine Le Pergole Torte Toscana IGT 2013
  • Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Conteisa 1998
  • Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2009
  • Antinori Solaia 2001
